As the world continues to change, Extension remains a steady force in North Carolina’s prosperity and the lives of millions. Now is the time to build on our successes, sustain our momentum and evolve for the future — ensuring we continue meeting the needs of our communities.
Extension is a bridge between North Carolinians and our state’s preeminent research university. With 101 local centers, more than 1,000 experts and a vast network of partnerships, Extension puts knowledge into action, delivering research-based solutions to local issues statewide.
To chart a course for the future, we traveled the state and heard from over 1,000 of our team members, met one-on-one with numerous stakeholders, and collected survey responses from more than 9,000 program participants and partners.
The resulting NC State Extension Strategic Plan 2023-2030 is a direct reflection of this comprehensive, stakeholder-driven planning process.
Strategic Plan Summary
NC State Extension’s strategic plan sets a clear vision for the future, outlining key priorities, goals and initiatives that will guide our work in the years ahead. It reinforces our commitment to translating science into practical solutions — driving real impacts that improve lives, strengthen communities and grow North Carolina.
Moving forward, NC State Extension’s strategic plan will provide a roadmap for advancing individual initiatives within our university while fostering continued collaboration, success and growth for our N.C. Cooperative Extension partnership.

NC State’s strategic plan reflects our land-grant mission, core values and bold goals, the cornerstones of our collective work throughout the university community. Our College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) plan takes the university blueprint and builds upon it, positioning CALS as the premiere land-grant college in the nation.
NC State Extension’s strategic plan embraces these shared values and aspirations, while outlining the unique opportunities, obstacles and objectives we must overcome to achieve our mission of enriching lives and promoting a prosperous North Carolina.
